JU holds international seminar on Criminology

Department of Government and Politics of Jahangirnagar University has organised an international seminar on Criminology. 

The two-hour-long seminar commenced at 11 am on Wednesday (10 May) in the department's seminar room. 

Professor Bashir Ahmed of the Department of Government and Politics and acting Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences inaugurated the seminar and addressed his welcome speech.

Professor Eric Chui, Head of the Department of Applied Social Sciences of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was present as the keynote speaker in the seminar. He gave a brief presentation on 'Why do people commit crime?' in light of contemporary criminological theories explaining why people break the law. 

Several key questions were answered in the seminar, including "Are people born criminals?", "Are criminals rational?" and "Is crime correlated with gender, race and income level?" Selected classical and modern criminological theories were used to answer these questions.

Prof. Eric Chui is the Co-Director of the Policy Research Centre for Innovation and Technology at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He obtained his Bachelor's degree in Social Work at The University of Hong Kong and then a Master's and PhD in Criminology at the University of Cambridge. 

He taught at the University of Exeter (UK), The University of Queensland (Australia), and several universities in Hong Kong.

In professional activity, Prof. CHUI serves on the editorial board of several SSCI journals, including Australian Social Work, Child & Family Social Work, International Journal of Offender Therapy and Comparative Criminology, International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health and Children and Youth Services Review. He has been the Associate Editor (East Asia Advisory Board) of the Social Work Education: The International Journal since March 2021.

Dr Herbary Cheung, Research Assistant Professor of the Department of Applied Social Sciences of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, addressed his thoughts on 'Surviving and thriving in academia from HKPFS awardee to early career researcher.'

Associate Professor of Government and Politics Department. Md. Farid Hossain discusses how Hong Kong is influencing the world through soft power and Hong Kong's various positions in the modern world.

Conducted by Dr Mohammad Tarikul Islam, Associate Professor of the Department of Government and Politics, the seminar ended with the concluding remarks of Professor Tarana Begum, Chair of the Department.  

In the seminar, Professor Dr Md. Shamsul Alam, Professor Dr KM Mahiuddin, Professor Dr Samsun Naher Khanam, Professor Dr Nasrin Sultana, Professor of Physics Department, AA Mamun, Associate Professor of Public Administration Department Monir Uddin Shikdar, Associate Professor of Government and Politics Department Tamalika Sultana, Md. Ikhtiyar Uddin Bhuiyan, Kamrul Hasan, Assistant Professor Mohammad Kamruzzaman and department students were present.
